Ten Signs You Need A New Garage Door

Garage doors are generally not paid much attention. In essence, we are only made more aware of their existence when they malfunction. However, you shouldn’t wait for your garage door to drop from its hinges before you consider replacing it with a new one.

Often, there are signs you may be oblivious to that show your garage door is due for an upgrade. It is one of the most critical factors considering that it is in front of the house or the first thing you see when you arrive home. It means that anyone passing by your house can easily see any default in its functioning.

You might notice that your garage door is sagging and noisy. You also might feel it is just merely ugly compared to your neighbour’s high-tech garage door. Perhaps it’s time to go with the “out with the old and in with the new” notion.

While you resolve some issues by getting repair service, the truth is one repair may lead to another and then another. In the long run, it is more cost-effective to get a brand new door installed. Here are ten signs you should set some money aside for a new garage door.

1. Persistent Noise When Opening The Garage Door

Do not ignore a garage door that makes creaky, scratchy or generally uncomfortable sounds. It is not supposed to make such noises since it is designed to run smoothly and not cause a nuisance to your ears. You shouldn’t have to hold your breath and prepare for an annoying sound each time you open or close the garage door.

It is a sign loud enough to tell you something wrong with the door, and it needs to be repaired or better still, replaced. Fixing it might not suffice depending on what is causing the sound. You may find that you will still need to replace specific hardware components such as hinges or cables. It is to stop the sounds and even after that; they can always return after a while.

The best thing to do in this case is to get a new garage door installed – one that will not make you cringe whenever you open it. A noisy garage door can quickly be taken lightly as just “one of those things.” But it could eventually lead to more significant hazards such as cables or springs breaking. It is inevitable to replace the door. Also, it would be better to do so before it is completely damaged and poses a risk to you and your loved ones.

2. Garage Door Dysfunctionality

Is your garage door decreasing in its functionality and does not open properly? Does it automatically reverse when the sensor is supposed to pick up that there is something directly under it?

It is likely getting too old and needs a replacement. The first option that most likely comes to mind is to get it repaired; this is all good and fair if it is a minor issue and not one that has been recurring for a while.

Garage doors are generally constructed using heavy materials such as wood, steel, aluminum or fibreglass and also contain several heavy hardware components. Repairing these now and then is not a fun DIY activity.

Also, it is easy to overlook small issues in the lifting mechanism of the garage door. It will likely turn out to be something unfixable if left for too long and still use it. It will cause a lot of damage in terms of the movement of the door and often the only solution is to replace it entirely.

There are several other dysfunctional issues with regards to these garage doors. Such as one side of the door sagging, the spring or lifting cables are breaking, the tracks going out of place or the door always getting stuck due to the rollers not running smoothly. Any of these can occur due to wear and tear. If you find that you have fixed any of these more than twice, then you may be in for more repairs.

Consistent repairs are a significant sign you need to dump your old garage door and move on to a hotter, more delicate version. Don’t worry; it’s not a jerk, sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Furthermore, the problem with the door can be due to obvious reasons. Say, for instance, your garage door is rammed in by your teenage daughter, or extreme weather conditions cause severe damages to the door. You might consider replacing the affected parts, but the extent of such problems usually is not clearly defined.

One damaged part may affect another, and once the door is unbalanced, it could also affect the tracking mechanism and motor. To determine the extent of damage, you should call on a professional.

On the other hand, your door might feel extremely heavy to lift. Generally, garage doors are weighty and if not for springs, lifting cables and motors, you wouldn’t be able to lift the garage door with one hand. Garage door openers make things even more comfortable as you don’t manually have to raise the door unless it is not operating correctly or stops working.

If you notice that your garage door is hefty and difficult to lift or the motor has to work extra hard to get the door open, this is an indication that the spring is weak or broken from the weight of the door and constant usage. No one but a professional should handle a broken garage door spring as it could still have some power in it that could cause personal injury. However, if this is the case, you will probably need to replace only the spring.

3. Changed Garage Door Appearance

You do not need a soothsayer to tell you your garage door is too old to continue serving its purpose. A glance at a sagging, peeling and sometimes rotting door will tell you that it’s time to get rid of it asap. If not for the sake of the beauty of your home, a garage door is one of the first things you see before entering your home; it definitely shouldn’t be looking shabby.

Although most of us never pay attention to it as it seems quite insignificant, the garage door is one of the most eye-catching details of a home. It stands out.

You don’t have to be saddled with a dull and necessary garage door when you can get a new one installed and give your house a better look. Don’t think a simple double-coat of paint will do the trick. It might look “good as new” but let’s face it; there is nothing as good as new as the new itself! You get to choose a more modern and classy door with any design or colour that will match your home. Getting a new garage door is sure to improve the overall appearance of your house, as underrated as it may be.

4. Outdated Garage Door Technology

If the garage door came with a house built ages ago, it is likely outdated as there are several modern types you can find today. Firstly, if your garage door is the type that you need to open each time you need to do it manually. It wouldn’t be such a bad idea of getting a new one that is automated and saves you the stress. Also, traditional garage doors tend to dull and unattractive.

Garage doors today have various features that make them more preferable. For one, eco-insulation is a feature that most modern doors have, which is an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of your home. Other features include stylish windows, doors made entirely from glass, lightweight construction and weather stripping that can withstand harsh weather conditions.

The world is fast-moving and technology has taken over. An old and outdated garage door might slow you down. If you think it’s time to modernize your home, try not to forget the garage door.

5. Inefficient

While a traditional garage door may well be outdated, it may also be very inefficient. You’re probably tired of having to struggle with it each time you need to open or close it. Supposing there’s an emergency and you need to get your car out of the garage quickly, it would be quite frustrating to be struggling to get the door open. Inefficient garage doors are often a result of poor maintenance, over-usage, or only too many damages and counter repairs.

Do not consider garage door types efficient even when new. A fold-up garage door requires you to get out of your car to open and close it. When you get back from work, tired and just looking forward to a shower, having to lift your garage door might feel like engaging in an extreme sport.

Meanwhile, a modern door that is quite slow is also inefficient. When the garage door takes ages to open, you might often feel like it would be quicker to lift it or push it yourself. Although a slow-moving door will by default teach you to be patient, it will also delay you substantially each day.

6. Change in Garage Space Usage

The average family uses the garage to keep cars and sometimes old belongings. However, many garages today turned into studios, playrooms for kids, and even home cinemas. You can set your garage into any room of your choice if you don’t need it to park your car any longer.

If you’re considering changing your garage into something else or using it for anything other than its original purpose, take care of your garage door first. It is a large door and would take up the space of one wall so you might need to get one that is more modern, secure and provides proper insulation.

7. The Level Of Security Required From The Garage Door

Perhaps you’ve got that brand new sports car or expensive camping gear you need to store in the garage. If your old door is a basic fold-up or roll-up door, it is probably not as secure as it should be. Getting a new garage door with synched home security will help put your mind at ease when you go to bed. Studies show that in 6 seconds, burglars can get into your home only through the garage door. It is often the least secure since we don’t pay it much attention.

Furthermore, thieves can break in by hacking, disengaging the motor and then manually opening the door. Or they can use a universal garage door remote to open it or break the lifting mechanism. So, merely having an automatic or modern door is not the answer. You will need to get one with improved security features. It is better to get one before it is too late. However, if you have already experienced a break-in through your garage door, there is no sign higher than that. It is wise to replace the entire door instead of just changing the locks or pin code, mainly because you might not be sure how exactly the burglars broke in.

8. Child Safety Concerns

If your young children often play in or near the garage, you will need to be extra careful that they do not find themselves directly under the door while it is closing. It is the importance of an automatic gate with sensors that detect when someone is crossing directly under it. While you can get these features installed in your old door, it is more cost-effective to get a new one with these already built-in.

9. Curb Appeal And Garage Doors

An aesthetically pleasing garage door will increase the curb appeal of your home and make it more valuable. Consider this if you plan to sell your home soon and want to amp up its value.

10. Garage Doors And Insulation

Older garage doors tend to have poor insulation features. If you’re always cold whenever you’re in the garage or find that your energy bills are unreasonably high, your door might not be energy efficient and well insulated. You may need a new garage door with top quality weather stripping and insulation materials.
